Everyday a new statistic comes out about something, makes me think I should have been a statistician. In the 1930's, 25% of our entire US population lived on 6 million family farms. Roughly today, you will find a little under 2 million family farms which is under 2% of our entire US population. About 8% of those farms account for 72% of our food sales. How can this be???
I am not a statistician, nor a great mathematical genius but let's do some basic equations here.
In 1930, we had an estimated US population of 24 million people. I deduce this from 6 million people on family farms being 25% of our population and if I multiply that times 4 to get 100% of our population I come up with 24 million people. Now taking all that into consideration, one could presume that 1/4 of our US population was able to feed the other 3/4 of us in 1930, using cultivated, bio dynamic, organic old world farming methods. I want you to take that bit of information for a moment and ponder on it.
Today, 80 years later, we have under 2% of our US population on farms, according to the CIA World Factbook our current US Population 307,212,123 (July 2010 est.) and they say that 8% of those 2 million farms provide 72% of all of our current food sales. Hold on just a minute...we only have 1/3 of the farms 80 years later but we have 283, 212, 123 million more people to feed. Is anyone else getting confused here with where we have put our priorities??? Not sure about the rest of you but I really thought fuel for the bodies (FOOD) was a little more important than fuel (OIL) for our transportation. Maybe I am mistaken, NOT!!!
OK, here is where I get confused even with the very best of my mathematical skills. We now have the ability to feed a US population that is 118% larger than 80 years ago on only 1/3 of the farms...how is that possible??? I will tell you WHY, we are feeding our nation on all these industrialized GMO and bio engineered forms of FRANKENFOOD...which is why we have so much NONSENSE rather than NUTRITION in our "food" supply. When we get back to supplying our food with NUTRIENT DENSE Foods...we can eliminate what all the NONSENSE in our "food" supply causes...Unknown Chronic Dis-Ease within our bodies. Just one more bit of Food for Thought for the day...how many more jobs could be created by working on building a greener, sustainable ORGANIC food supply in the USA??? If 1/4 of our population did it 80 years ago...how many people would that take out of the unemployment line today??? How many healthy, able bodied people would that get out of the medical offices they are now visiting on a daily basis??? Think about these things for a bit...then give me your feedback...I am asking for it ;-)
